The type of pattern-welded steel is the called “Damascus steel”. Originally used in middle eastern sword making, the method has been lost since about the 16th century. But in 1973 bladesmith William F. Moran unveiled his “Damascus knives” at the Knifemakers’ Guild Show. Ever since then modern pattern-welded steel blades have been called “Damascus knives”... The sheath is high quality, well made leather with a plastic liner and a very well done dangler attachment. The handle has superb ergonomics and will fit a variety of hand sizes in most any grip. The over all fit and finish is outstanding and comparable to many knives that easily cost 2 to 3 times as much. The blade has a very versatile shape and the full flat grind makes it an outstanding slicer; great for food prep, game processing and general cutting duties. This is not a dedicated bushcraft knife, so it does not excel at wood crafting or carving, but you could do a lot worse than this. The N690 steel is a great choice for a food/game prep knife as well as general use. I did have to touch up the factory edge just a bit (added a slight convex to the secondary) to get it to where I like it. The heat treat seems spot on as after its initial touch up, I've not had to do more than a mild stropping after 2 weeks of household cutting chores. Overall, I am very impressed with Southern Cross, and I expect I will be getting more.
Beyond happy with my purchase from Russian Knives. Price was excellent. Difficult to find this item and they had it in stock. Shipped out priority mail within hours of my purchase. Had it in hand in two days time! The knife is stunning. Can’t go wrong with a TRC knife- even the package screams attention to detail. I will look here first for any future purchases! Thanks again!
I was temped to knock this down to four stars because this knife is pretty rough on pockets, and even when folded it presents a cutting hazard in the pocket because of how close the edge sits to the spind of the handle. But I'm going to give it five stars anyway. Despite it's two slight hazards, this knife is very well executed and just plain cool. It's smooth, fast, locks up solidly, came with an excellent edge, great overall fit and finish, and presents a great value. It's tempting to just buy another one. Overall, a great knife that nobody else I know is carrying! Thanks.
I picked this knife out for my wife for her birthday. It's a beauty and is a small little utility that looks like a Japanese Aikuchi. I know she will love it. Shipped very fast. Excellent service!
This is a smaller Sheepsfoot knife but it is made for big tough tasks. The micarta handle is beautiful and feels awesome in the hand with just the right number of finger grooves The knife has a nice heft to it that is very reassuring. This will probably become my favorite backpacking knife. I have no problem with the sheath. Easy to extract but still has good retention.
Cuts nicely, sheath is solid.
I carried my Kisten on a day hike. The knife is a light weight, sharp spear point with a great saw back. The handle is large and comfortable to hold. The sheath holds the knife firmly without harming the blade. Kisten, could perform well in combat too! You will be pleased with your purchase.
This is my second TRC knife and I have to say the fit and finish is second to none. It was my first purchase with Russian knives and they have exceeded expectations with fast delivery and prompt answers to questions before the order. A+ Rating for knife and company.
TLDR; This knife kicks a$$, so throw down the cash.
I understand, we are all willing to spend plenty of money on knives. However, if you are looking for the pinnacle of semi-custom knives, TRC is one of the finest places to look. It was hard for me initially to start using this knife, it was so perfect. The finishing, geometry, grind, sharpness. It really was difficult for me to put this South Pole through serious usage. Throwing down 300 dollars on a blade should result in heirloom quality and the TRC is definitely that. However I exited the honey moon phase and ventured on to my nearby forests. This knife has a wonderful balance between batonning ability and food prep (slicing) ability. I was beyond impressed. I have come to realize that when you spend big money on your favorite things, take cars for example. You do not spend money on a beautiful Porsche to sit in your drive way and look gorgeous for neighbors. You buy a Porsche to get out on the curvy back roads and rip it around because the car is capable of it and performs amazing. In the same sense, this knife does exactly that. The performance of this knife will excel with any task. So yes, you may get a few microscopic scratches and normal wear and tear, but the experiences and memories you make with your new knife will be worth more than your shiny beauty piece for the bookshelf. (Or you can do what I did and buy 2!)
Like BR at less than half the cost. I know because I have some. Good stainless steel. Excellent fit and finish. Very useful blade length.
I was very satisfied with this purchase. It was exactly as advertised. The material was of excellent quality and the workmanship and finish were sterling. I am very pleased, as I have been with all my acquisitions from Russian Knives.
Great ergonomics, nice blade with good steel. Sheath is ok, its a dangler. Jimping would have been nice.
The knife is solid and the handle is very comfortable. Easy to hide in a Camelback pocket for a day hike. D2 is a good tool steel. The blade action could not be better. I have the HT-1 and HT-2 and I’m very satisfied with my purchases!
This will not be long. An easy purchase from the website and the item arrived exactly as described and sooner than I was expecting.
